Overview — CLAT Complete Notes by Plutus IAS

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is the gateway to 23+ National Law Universities — India’s most competitive law entrance exam. The exam shifted to a comprehension-based format in 2020, making analytical reading and application of legal principles far more important than memorisation. These notes by Plutus IAS cover all five sections of CLAT UG in the passage-based format, with updated content for the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, and key Supreme Court judgments through 2024.

What’s Inside — 5 Sections Fully Covered

  • Chapter 1 — Exam Structure & NLU Strategy: CLAT UG 2026–27 complete section breakdown (English 22–26Q, Current Affairs 28–32Q, Legal Reasoning 35–39Q, Logical Reasoning 28–32Q, Quantitative 10–14Q; total ~120 marks, 2 hours; -0.25 negative marking), 8-NLU cut-off reference table (NLSIU, NALSAR, WBNUJS, NLU Jodhpur, NLU Lucknow), target marks table for top-50 rank.
  • Chapter 2 — Legal Reasoning: 4-step passage-based method (Read Principle → Identify Facts → Apply → Eliminate), Constitutional Law (Fundamental Rights Art.14/19/21, Directive Principles, Basic Structure Doctrine — Kesavananda Bharati), Indian Contract Act 1872 (offer vs invitation to treat, free consent, void vs voidable, breach), Law of Torts (negligence — Donoghue v Stevenson, strict liability — Rylands v Fletcher, absolute liability — MC Mehta 1987, vicarious liability, defamation), IPC/BNS 2023 (actus reus + mens rea, key sections, general exceptions, BNS changes vs IPC).
  • Chapter 3 — English Language: 7-question-type table (main idea, author’s tone, inference, vocabulary in context, grammar, summary), 40+ high-frequency CLAT vocabulary words (legal English terms, tone words — positive/negative/neutral), grammar essentials (subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference, parallel structure, misplaced modifiers, articles).
  • Chapter 4 — Current Affairs & GK: 10-topic legal current affairs table (Ayodhya verdict, S.377 decriminalisation, Right to Privacy, Electoral Bonds 2024, BNS/BNSS/BSA 2023, Same-Sex Marriage 2023, Marital Rape challenge, Sedition law replacement), writs (Habeas Corpus, Mandamus, Prohibition, Certiorari, Quo Warranto), international courts (ICJ, ICC, ITLOS), key constitutional cases from 1967–2024, UN bodies, Preamble analysis.
  • Chapter 5 — Logical Reasoning, Quant & Strategy: LR 6-type table (inference, assumption, conclusion, strengthen/weaken, flaw identification, analogy), Quantitative Techniques essentials (percentages, ratios, averages, SI vs CI, DI strategy), full CLAT strategy table (target scores per section, time allocation — Legal 40 min / CA 25 min / English 20 min / LR 20 min / Quant 15 min), 6-month preparation calendar with weekly output goals.

Why This Is Different — CLAT 2020+ Format

Most CLAT preparation books were written before the 2020 format change. The old format tested isolated legal knowledge — bare act memorisation, standalone GK questions, IQ-style reasoning puzzles. The current CLAT format is entirely passage-based: every question comes from a reading passage, and success depends on applying stated principles to new facts, not recalling what you already know. These notes are written specifically for the current passage-based format, with applied examples and the analytical method that this format rewards.

Who Should Use This

  • Class XI/XII students targeting CLAT UG 2026 or 2027 admissions who want structured preparation across all five sections
  • Aspirants aiming for NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, or any of the 23 Consortium NLUs
  • Students who have attempted CLAT once and want to improve rank — particularly in Legal Reasoning, which most candidates under-prepare for
  • Aspirants simultaneously preparing for AILET (NLU Delhi), SLAT, or other law entrance exams — content overlaps significantly

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this sufficient for CLAT preparation or do I need other books?
This covers all five CLAT sections comprehensively. For Legal Reasoning, supplement with 500–1000 passage practice questions from mock tests. For Current Affairs, read one legal news source daily (Live Law, Bar & Bench, The Hindu Legal). For English, supplement with regular reading of quality journalism. The notes give you the framework; practice gives you speed.

Is IPC relevant or only BNS 2023?
Both are relevant. BNS 2023 replaced IPC effective July 2024, but CLAT passages may reference either. These notes cover both frameworks with a comparison of key changes.

Does CLAT test prior law knowledge or only passage-based reasoning?
Officially passage-based since 2020 — you apply principles given in the passage. However, prior legal knowledge speeds comprehension dramatically. Knowing what ‘consideration’, ‘mens rea’, or ‘locus standi’ means before you see it in a passage gives you a significant time advantage.

Is this useful for AILET (NLU Delhi) preparation too?
AILET (All India Law Entrance Test for NLU Delhi) has a similar format and overlapping content. Legal Reasoning, English, and GK sections in these notes are directly applicable to AILET preparation as well.
